Me and God -- Definitely
Three years ago when Libby Schimmel came to Leadership Quest she believed in God and went to youth group.  When it came time to talk about the Bible or about deeper things at youth group she didn’t share.  She just listened.

While at LQ, the idea that God impressed upon her was that she can do life with God -- everything.  The fall after LQ, Libby was in a rock-climbing gym class.  She took it because her friends were taking it.  She was afraid of heights.  On her first climb she slipped and the person belaying her didn’t catch her right away.  This was very scary for her.  As she reflected on this incident, she realized that she could ask God to give her strength.  Thus, she began embracing doing life with God -- everything.  Whenever she was scared, in need or happy, God was a part of things.  And Libby has come to love rock climbing!

Now Libby shares during the Bible study time at youth group because she feels like she has a more informed opinion.  For the past three years, she has helped with Young Life.  One year she helped lead games.  This year she is leading a small group of middle- school girls.  As she reflects back, “LQ definitely gave me the confidence to lead.”

Early Bird registration for Leadership Quest ends February 29th.

Shannon came to Leadership Quest the summer after her junior year in high school.  She came because she had observed other girls in her youth group who had been to LQ.  These girls were different.  She had observed changes in them, changes for the better.  They were confident in their faith, they were grateful, and they wanted to do things for God.  Shannon wanted that.   At her church it was a privilege to be invited to LQ, so when she was invited she was thrilled!

When asked about the impact of LQ on her life Shannon said that it kept her motivated towards her goals because they were written down, and because they were things she wanted and she believed God wanted.  One of her goals was to spend time with her younger brother before she left for college.  As a result of LQ she stayed focused on that goal and now has a close, bonded, and personal relationship with her brother, her only sibling!  Another goal was to go on a mission trip outside of the US.  After 6 mission trips in the states, she recently went to the Czech Republic to encourage the Christians there. Because LQ is a training ground for student leadership development at her church, Shannon was given the opportunity to lead fundraisers and small groups at her church.  She was given the opportunity to attend adult planning meetings and voice her opinions.  She knew that the younger students in the youth group looked up to her.  These experiences allowed her to further grow in her leadership skills.  They showed her that she did have a true passion to communicate and help other Christians wrestle with their own faith.

Shannon says that LQ helped her grow up.  It helped her to put her life into perspective.  Currently Shannon is a sophomore at Monmouth College.  She is a Psychology and Religious Studies Major.  She wants to pursue a career where she can help others -- perhaps youth ministry, perhaps missions.  A verse that guides her, “…serve one another in love.  The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love you neighbor as yourself.’” Galatians 4:13-14

Kyle Reflects on How God Used Leadership Quest in His Life

The summer after his Freshman year Kyle attended Leadership Quest. On the second to the last night, Kyle remembers having a conversation with his tent-mate Phil.  He shared with Phil how he wanted to know, for sure, that God was always there.  Phil prayed that Kyle would have the assurance that God was there.  Now, three years later, Kyle has only missed 2 nights of reading his Bible since his LQ experience.  When I spoke to him recently, he said that the night he prayed with Phil was the last day of his life without truly knowing God was there.

When Kyle describes LQ, he says he remembers how great it was-- every minute.  He was able to use his LQ experience as a sermon at church and for an essay in his speech class.  Since LQ he has been a leader for his youth group and has helped with the junior high and 5-6th grade ministries at his church.

Last Fall, he was asked to go on a mission trip to Haiti over Spring Break 2012.  He wasn’t sure because the trip seemed expensive.  He had been saving up some money, but he wondered, was this how he wanted to spend his it?  Then, he thought it was selfish to think about it this way.  He wanted to trust God to work out the finances.  Today he only needs to raise $400 of the $1400 he needs to go on the trip.  He knows now, that God is providing.

He describes LQ as the “first log on the fire” for his faith.  Since LQ he has traveled on mission trips to Kentucky, Missouri, Virginia, and this spring he knows he will be in Haiti.  He says that he can’t imagine his life without LQ.  He is still amazed at how just one week can completely turn everything around!
